  How may we help you?

Important Announcement

 Important UI Announcement:

Legislation has been passed that affects those receiving unemployment insurance (UI) as well as a social security pension/benefits. Prior to this change, individuals who claimed benefits for unemployment insurance had a portion of their social security benefits deducted from the UI benefits. Beginning with the week of July 3, 2011 through July 9, 2011 the change in legislation will no longer require this deduction to take place. If you have questions you should call the VEC at 1-866-832-2363 (toll free).

Customers seeking unemployment assistance are encouraged to use our online services (Unemployed? File a Claim Online) as a first option since they will be able to reach the VEC quicker than by telephone.

  • Customers with a social security number ending with an odd number are asked to call on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday.
  • Customers with a social security number ending with an even number are asked to call on Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday.
  • This process will not affect the benefit amount or adversely delay the processing of the customer’s claim for benefits.

To file a new claim by telephone, call toll free 1-866-832-2363.
To file a weekly claim by telephone, call toll free 1-800-897-5630.

Emergency Unemployment Compensation

 Unemployment Compensation Extension Act:

Congress passed legislation, which was subsequently signed into law on December 23, 2011.

News reports can be misleading as it relates to citizens receiving unemployment insurance. Reports state that this legislation restores benefits for up to 99 weeks. This is not true in Virginia and the reason for that is tied to the total unemployment rate (TUR).

 Trade Adjustment Assistance:

The TAA program is a federal program established under the Trade Act of 1974. The TAA Program provides aid to workers who lose their jobs or whose hours of work and wages are reduced as a result of increased imports.

The goal is to help such laid-off workers return to suitable employment as quickly as possible. TAA offers a variety of benefits and reemployment services to assist unemployed workers prepare for and obtain suitable employment. Workers may be eligible for training, job search and relocation allowances, income support and other reemployment services.

Health Coverage Tax Credit Program (HCTC)

The Health Coverage Tax Credit is a federal program administered by the IRS that pays 72.5% of monthly healthcare premiums for eligible individuals.  To receive these benefit individuals must register with the IRS HCTC program... Because registering with the IRS can take some time, Virginia was awarded a grant to process up to three (3) HCTC gap filler monthly payments of 72.5% of an individual’s monthly healthcare premiums (medical only). Be sure to register for the IRS HCTC program as soon as possible as three (3) months of HCTC gap filler payments are the maximum that can be received from Virginia.
