Short-Time Compensation (STC), also referred to as work sharing or shared-work programs, is an alternative to layoffs for employers facing a reduction in available work. STC allows eligible employees to receive a pro-rated portion of unemployment benefits while working reduced hours due to economic downturns or other reasons. This program aims to help both employers and employees by avoiding layoffs while maintaining a stable workforce. Eligibility requirements can be found under section § 60.2-716. Benefits of the Code of Virginia. For more detailed information and to access the STC application, please log in to your account on the Virginia Employment Commission's Employer Self Service (ESS) portal.
